History
In 1952, a small nature park with ten fairy-tale scenes opened its wooden gates to 200 visitors. Illustrator Anton Pieck had sketched trolls, gnomes and a talking tree on dinner napkins; the Dutch fell in love overnight.
Today Efteling spans 72 hectares, welcomes 5.4 million dreamers yearly, and still keeps Pieck’s original hand-drawn maps in a glass case. Every new ride—from the 2017 steel dragon Symbolica to the 1984 ghost ship—must be signed off by the “Pieck Police” to protect the fairy-tale soul.
Highlights
- Duel the 38 m dive coaster Baron 1898 at 90 km/h
- Soar through glowing castles on Droomvlucht
- Watch ravens turn into stunt riders in Raveleijn
- Meet the talking oak in the Fairy Tale Forest
- End with Aquanura’s 12,000 water jets dancing to live music
Full Description
Europalaan 1 opens into a kingdom where pine trees smell like waffles and music floats on the breeze. Turn left for the steel scream of Baron 1898; turn right for the gentle glow of Droomvlucht’s fairy castles. In between, the forest whispers: Long-Neck the giraffe waves from 1952, and the Little Mermaid still combs her hair in a hidden grotto.

FAQ's
When is the best time to arrive?
Gates open 10:00 sharp. Arrive 09:45 for front-row parking and zero queue at Symbolica. From 10:00-11:00 the park feels half-empty; ride Baron 1898 twice before coffee. Golden hour is 18:00-20:00—lines vanish, lights glow, and Aquanura’s final show at 15 minutes before closing is pure fireworks on water.
Are single-rider lines available?
Yes—Baron 1898, Joris en de Draak, and Python have free single-rider lanes that cut waits from 45 min to 5 min. Look for the dragon-scale signs. Families can ride together in the normal queue; solo travellers or brave parents use the fast lane guilt-free.
Can I bring my own food?
Absolutely—picnic tables dot the Fairy Tale Forest and Plaza. Only glass and alcohol are banned. Insider tip: buy a fresh stroopwafel inside (€2.50) and eat your sandwiches under the talking oak—he’ll comment on your lunch choices in Dutch.
What height do kids need for the big coasters?
Baron 1898: 1.32 m; Python: 1.20 m; Joris en de Draak: 1.10 m; Flying Dutchman: 1.00 m. Free measuring stations at every ride entrance. Kids who miss by 1 cm get a “Future Dragon Rider” sticker and priority on Droomvlucht instead.
Is the park open in winter?
Yes—Winter Efteling (mid-Nov to Jan) swaps flowers for 1.5 million fairy lights, ice-skating rinks, and 80 cm of snow on the roofs. Baron 1898 still dives at 90 km/h, warm glühwein flows, and the Fairy Tale Forest glows with fire pits. Same ticket price, half the crowds, 100 % the magic.
