Overview

Les Rencontres d’Arles 2026 is the world’s most celebrated photography festival, turning the Roman city of Arles into a massive open-air gallery for the entire summer. Since its founding in 1970, the festival has gained a reputation for its cutting-edge curation, often debuting works that define the next decade of visual arts. Over 40 major exhibitions are staged across the city’s historic landscape, utilizing unconventional spaces like 12th-century chapels, abandoned industrial warehouses, and ancient Roman ruins to create a dialogue between heritage and contemporary imagery.

During the legendary opening week in early July, Arles becomes a global meeting point for artists, collectors, and photography enthusiasts. The festival is not just a series of static displays; it is a dynamic cultural event featuring nightly open-air projections in the ancient Roman Theater, live debates, and book signing sessions that pulse through the city’s narrow streets. It serves as a vital platform for emerging talent through its prestigious Discovery Award, making it the definitive destination for anyone looking to witness the power of the photographic medium in its many evolving forms.

Event Highlights

  • The Grand Projections: Spectacular nightly screenings of photography on a massive screen held under the stars at the 2,000-year-old Antique Theater.
  • Unconventional Exhibition Sites: A rare opportunity to view modern art inside exclusive heritage sites like the Abbey of Montmajour and the Church of Saint-Anne.
  • The Discovery Award: A dedicated exhibition showcasing the shortlisted works of the world’s most promising new photographers, chosen by international curators.
  • Photography Workshops: Intensive sessions led by master photographers that allow participants to sharpen their technical and artistic vision in the heart of Provence.

Why Attend

Les Rencontres d’Arles is a must-attend for professional photographers, art students, and travelers who appreciate the intersection of history and modern creativity. Unlike traditional museum experiences, the festival allows you to explore the city of Arles as a living museum, where a single ticket provides access to hidden architectural gems rarely open to the public. It is a place of discovery where you can see the world through the lenses of hundreds of artists, ranging from social activists to abstract visionaries.

If you want to be at the center of the global photographic conversation, there is no event more significant than Arles.

FAQ's

Is one day enough to see the entire festival?

It is physically impossible to see all 40+ exhibitions in a single day as they are spread across the entire city. Most visitors recommend a minimum of three days to properly explore the main venues and participate in the evening events. If you only have one day, focus on the Parc des Ateliers and the central venues like the Espace Van Gogh.

Are the exhibition venues air-conditioned?

Many of the historic venues, such as the old churches and chapels, do not have modern air conditioning and can become quite warm in July. The stone walls provide some natural cooling, but it is important to stay hydrated and plan visits to larger, cooled venues during the peak heat. The main auditorium and some newer galleries do offer full climate control for a more comfortable viewing experience.

Can I take photographs of the artwork inside the exhibitions?

Generally, photography of the exhibition spaces is allowed for personal use, but close-up photos of individual artworks are often restricted due to copyright. Each venue usually has signs indicating the specific rules for that artist's work, so it is best to check before snapping a picture. Professional photography or filming requires special permission and press accreditation from the festival office.

Is the festival accessible for people with reduced mobility?

While the festival organizers make efforts to provide ramps, Arles is an ancient city with narrow cobblestone streets and historic buildings without elevators. Some upper-floor exhibitions in old houses may be difficult to reach, but the majority of major venues like the Parc des Ateliers are fully accessible. A dedicated accessibility map is usually provided at the main ticket office to help plan your route.

What happens if I lose my All Exhibitions Pass?

The festival passes are strictly personal and usually contain a QR code that is scanned at the entrance of every venue. If a pass is lost, it generally cannot be replaced for free, and a new one must be purchased at the current rate. It is highly recommended to keep a digital copy or photo of your pass on your phone as a backup in case the physical paper is damaged.
