The Musikfest Bremen was founded in 1989 by artistic director Thomas Albert with support from the Bremen Senate and local business partners to strengthen the city’s cultural appeal. Over the years, it has grown into a prestigious festival known for its artistic quality and stylistic diversity. The festival showcases a broad spectrum of music — from opera, symphonic, choral, and chamber music to jazz, world, and experimental music — often performed in both traditional and unconventional venues across Bremen and the surrounding northwest region. Since 2001, the festival traditionally opens with “Eine große Nachtmusik,” a multi-venue concert around Bremen’s illuminated market square.
