Overview

Signal Festival is the largest showcase of digital and creative culture in the Czech Republic, transforming the historic streets and landmarks of Prague into a breathtaking open-air gallery of light. Each year, international and local artists converge to illuminate the city with cutting-edge technology, featuring large-scale video mapping on Gothic facades, interactive light installations, and immersive site-specific projects. The festival effectively bridges the gap between historical architecture and the future of digital art, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors who navigate the city’s cobblestone paths to witness Prague in a completely new, radiant light.

The event is divided into multiple walking routes that guide spectators through different districts, such as the Old Town, Vinohrady, or Hradčany, each offering a unique atmosphere and artistic narrative. While many of the outdoor installations are freely accessible to the public, the festival also features “Signal INSIDE,” a curated series of premium indoor installations located in unconventional spaces like underground clubs, historical palaces, or industrial halls. This dual nature of the festival allows for both broad community engagement and intimate, deep artistic experiences, making it a cornerstone of Prague’s autumn cultural season.

Event Highlights

  • Grand Video Mapping: Spectacular 3D projections bring iconic buildings like the Basilica of St. Ludmila or the Old Town Hall Tower to life with synchronized sound and motion.
  • Signal INSIDE: A collection of exclusive, ticketed indoor installations that provide a more immersive and contemplative environment away from the outdoor crowds.
  • Interactive Artworks: Many installations encourage audience participation, where movement or touch directly influences the light and sound patterns of the display.
  • Signal Forum: An international conference and meeting point for professionals where the intersection of art, technology, and social ecosystems is discussed by global experts.

Why Attend

Attending Signal Festival offers a unique perspective on Prague that traditional tourism cannot provide, as it merges the city’s rich history with the latest trends in artificial intelligence and digital design. It is a sensory feast that turns a simple evening stroll into an adventurous exploration of light, sound, and space. Whether you are a photography enthusiast looking for the perfect long-exposure shot or a family seeking an evening of wonder, the festival provides a high-quality cultural experience that is both intellectually stimulating and visually stunning.

FAQ's

Is the festival suitable for children and can I bring a stroller?

The outdoor installations are wonderful for children, but the festival attracts huge crowds which can make navigating with a stroller difficult. Many of the Signal INSIDE indoor locations have narrow stairs or limited space where strollers are strictly prohibited for safety reasons. It is recommended to use a baby carrier if you plan to visit the indoor galleries or stick to the wider public squares for the free shows.

What happens if it rains during the four days of the festival?

Signal Festival takes place regardless of the weather, and the light installations often look even more magical when reflected on wet cobblestones. In the event of very heavy rain or strong winds, some outdoor technical equipment may be temporarily turned off to prevent damage or electrical issues. Visitors are encouraged to dress in layers and bring a pocket umbrella or waterproof jacket to ensure they stay comfortable while walking.

How do I find my way between the different light installations?

The most efficient way to navigate is by downloading the official Signal Festival mobile app, which includes an interactive GPS-enabled map and full program details. You can also find large illuminated navigation points and printed maps at the main festival hubs located in the Old Town and Vinohrady districts. Volunteers in bright yellow jackets, known as Signalists, are stationed along the routes to help guide visitors to the next artwork.

Are there specific times when the crowds are smaller?

The festival is generally less crowded during the first hour of operation at 19:00 or during the final hour before midnight. Thursday and Sunday nights typically see fewer visitors than the peak times on Friday and Saturday, which are the most popular for locals and groups. If you want a quieter experience, consider starting your walk at the installations furthest from the city center and working your way inward.

Can I take professional photos and use a tripod during the event?

Photography for personal use is permitted and encouraged, but the use of tripods and flash is prohibited in all indoor "Signal INSIDE" locations to ensure a smooth flow of visitors. In the public outdoor areas, tripods can be used but are difficult to manage due to the high density of the moving crowds. Professional filming or commercial photography requires prior written permission and accreditation from the festival's press department.
