History
The Mythos Mozart exhibition is housed in the historic Steffl department store building on Kärntner Straße, directly linked to the apartment where Mozart spent his final months in 1791. It was here, at Rauhensteingasse 8 (then known as “Zum roten Säbel”), that he composed The Magic Flute and began his haunting Requiem before dying on December 5, 1791, at age 35.
This immersive experience revives 18th-century Vienna through cutting-edge multimedia, transforming commercial space into a portal to Mozart’s world. Designed with input from lighting artist Moritz Waldemeyer, it honors the composer’s genius in the very heart of the city he defined.

FAQ's
Do I need to book a specific time slot?
Yes, all visitors must reserve a time slot online in advance to ensure entry and manage flow through the intimate exhibition spaces. Upon arrival, present your booking at the Welcome Desk up to 15 minutes before your selected time. Walk-ins are accepted only if capacity allows, but pre-booking guarantees access—especially during peak tourist seasons or holidays. Time slots run every 30 minutes, and your ticket is valid only for the chosen window. Late arrivals may be accommodated in the next available slot, subject to availability. This system prevents overcrowding in immersive rooms like the REQUIEM candle space. Booking early secures your preferred time. It’s quick and easy via the official platform. Plan ahead for a smooth, magical Mozart journey.
Is the exhibition suitable for children?
Absolutely—children of all ages enjoy the interactive and visual elements of Mythos Mozart. The Little Night Music room lets kids play real instruments from around the world, while the 360° Vienna projections feel like a virtual adventure. The candle-lit REQUIEM room is dramatic but not frightening, and the rooftop offers fun photo opportunities. No complex reading is required; the experience is sensory and playful. Strollers are allowed, and the route is wheelchair-friendly. It’s a great family introduction to classical music and history without being stuffy. Duration is just one hour—perfect attention span. Combine with a rooftop treat for a full outing. This makes culture fun and memorable for young visitors.
Can I take photos or videos inside?
Yes, photography and video are encouraged throughout the exhibition to capture your Mozart moment—except in the REQUIEM room, where flash is prohibited to preserve the candle ambiance and safety. Use phone cameras freely in the VIENNA 1791 projections, instrument room, and especially the Sky & Roofgarden for stunning city backdrops. Digital photo stations offer fun Mozart-themed overlays. Share your experience on social media; tagging helps spread the word. Tripods or professional equipment require prior permission. Respect other visitors by avoiding blocking pathways. The rooftop is ideal for group shots with St. Stephen’s in view. This policy lets you document a unique Vienna memory. Create and share your own little night music.
Is there a café or place to eat?
Yes, the Sky Café & Restaurant on the rooftop terrace offers drinks, snacks, and light meals with panoramic views over Vienna’s First District. Open daily, it serves coffee, wine, pastries, salads, and Austrian specialties—perfect after your exhibition. Your ticket includes a discount voucher for use during your visit. Indoor and outdoor seating are available, weather permitting. No food or drinks are allowed inside the exhibition rooms, but you can enjoy refreshments before or after. The terrace is a highlight, overlooking Karlskirche and the Ferris wheel. It’s a relaxing spot to reflect on Mozart’s era. Elevators provide easy access. Combine culture with cuisine in one location. This elevates your experience from immersive to indulgent.
What makes this different from other Mozart sites?
Mythos Mozart stands out by using state-of-the-art multimedia—projections, light design by Moritz Waldemeyer, and interactive sound—to make history feel alive and emotional, not just informational. Unlike static house museums, you don’t just see where Mozart died—you feel his final days through 1,500 candles, fly over 1791 Vienna, and play global instruments. It’s located in the actual building linked to his last apartment, adding authenticity. The rooftop garden offers modern Vienna views, bridging past and present. Compact at one hour, it’s ideal for busy travelers. English support and wheelchair access ensure inclusivity. It’s less about artifacts, more about atmosphere and imagination. This fusion of technology, location, and emotion creates a uniquely moving tribute. Experience Mozart as never before.
