Overview

The Wiener Städtische Half Marathon is a centerpiece of the world-renowned Vienna City Marathon weekend, offering a breathtaking 21-kilometer journey through one of the most elegant capitals in the world. Participants begin their race on the iconic Reichsbrücke, soaring over the Danube River before weaving through the lush greenery of the Prater park and past the historic Ferris wheel. The course is expertly designed to showcase Vienna’s imperial grandeur, blending a flat, fast-paced track with a cultural tour that captures the spirit of classical Europe.

As the race progresses, runners are treated to views of the spectacular Ringstraße, the Vienna State Opera, and the majestic Schönbrunn Palace. The event is famous for its “Theater of Emotions” atmosphere, where hundreds of thousands of spectators line the streets to provide a wall of sound and encouragement. Crossing the finish line at the Rathausplatz, right in front of the stunning neo-Gothic City Hall, provides a triumphant conclusion to an event that seamlessly combines elite sporting standards with the artistic heritage of Austria.

Event Highlights

  • The Imperial Start: Runners experience a thrilling start on the Reichsbrücke bridge, accompanied by the powerful sounds of Strauss’s Blue Danube Waltz playing over the loudspeakers.
  • Music Along the Route: In keeping with Vienna’s reputation as the city of music, various live bands and classical ensembles perform at intervals to keep the energy levels high for every participant.
  • The Green Lung: A significant portion of the race takes place in the Prater, a vast parkland that offers a refreshing natural environment and wide, flat paths ideal for maintaining a steady pace.
  • Grand Finish at Rathaus: The final stretch leads participants to the historic City Hall square, where a massive celebration awaits with medals, refreshments, and a vibrant festival area.

Why Attend

This half-marathon is the perfect choice for runners who appreciate a well-organized, high-capacity event that maintains a sense of grace and history. Because the course is famously flat and shielded from wind in many sections, it is an excellent venue for athletes looking to set a new personal record or for first-time half-marathoners seeking a supportive environment. The integration of the race into the larger Vienna City Marathon weekend means you will be part of a massive international field of nearly 40,000 runners.

FAQ's

Is it necessary to provide a medical certificate to participate in the Vienna Half Marathon?

Unlike some other European countries, Austria does not legally require a medical certificate for participation in the half marathon. However, the organizers strongly recommend that all runners undergo a health check-up before the event to ensure they are physically capable of completing the distance. You will be asked to confirm that you are in good health during the online registration process.

Can I pick up my race documents and start number on the morning of the race?

No, race numbers and start kits must be collected in person at the Vienna City Marathon Expo "Vienna Sports World" in the days leading up to the race. The Expo is typically held on Friday and Saturday, and no bibs are distributed on Sunday morning at the start line. If you cannot attend in person, you can authorize someone else to collect it for you with a written power of attorney and a copy of your ID.

What kind of refreshments are provided at the aid stations along the course?

The organizers provide refreshment stations at regular intervals, approximately every 5 kilometers, offering water and electrolyte drinks in recyclable cups. Some stations also provide bananas, apples, and energy gels to help runners maintain their glucose levels throughout the 21 kilometer journey. At the finish line, a larger refreshment area offers snacks, fruit, and recovery beverages to all finishers.

Are there pace makers available to help runners achieve specific finish times?

Yes, the event provides experienced pace makers who are clearly identified by large balloons or flags indicating their target finish times. These pacers cover various time goals, such as 1 hour 30 minutes, 1 hour 45 minutes, and 2 hours, helping you maintain a consistent speed throughout the race. Following a pacer is a great way to ensure you don't start too fast and have enough energy for the final sprint.

Is there a safe place to store my personal belongings while I am running the race?

A dedicated clothing transport service is provided, allowing you to drop off a bag at the start area which will then be transported to the finish area at Rathausplatz. You must use the official bag provided in your start kit and ensure your bib number is clearly attached to it for identification. You can then collect your belongings immediately after crossing the finish line and receiving your medal.
