Ankara International Film Festival – (European side of Turkey) 2025
Background & History
The Ankara International Film Festival was first held in 1988, marking the capital’s introduction to large-scale cinematic celebrations. Initiated under the leadership of Mahmut Tali Öngören and Aziz Nesin, it started with around 40 films from 10 countries alongside 30 local productions. Although interrupted in 1991 due to geopolitical issues, the festival resumed in 1992 with stronger institutional backing. Over the years, it has honored cinema contributors with awards such as the Aziz Nesin Emek Award and the Mahmut Tali Öngören Special Award, named after key figures in the festival’s history. The event has grown into a vital cultural occasion that supports both domestic and international filmmakers and attracts film lovers, industry professionals, and tourists alike.
