History
The Reichstag, built 1884–1894 in neo-Renaissance style, symbolized the German Empire’s power. Burned in 1933 under suspicious circumstances, it became a Nazi propaganda tool before Allied bombs gutted it in 1945.
After reunification, British architect Norman Foster redesigned it (1995–1999) with a transparent glass dome—symbolizing democratic openness. The surrounding Government District rose on the former “death strip” of the Berlin Wall, completing Berlin’s transformation into Germany’s political heart.
Highlights
- 2–2.5-hour expert-guided tour of Reichstag and Government District
- Visit the Plenary Chamber (Bundestag) and iconic glass dome
- Panoramic 360° views from the rooftop terrace
- Live English or German commentary on German politics and architecture
- Behind-the-scenes insights into Bundestag operations
- Optional free Bundestag speech (45 min, select dates)

FAQ's
Do I need to bring ID, and what’s the security process like?
Yes—every visitor over 16 must present a valid passport or national ID card (driver’s licenses not accepted). Security is strict: airport-style screening with metal detectors, bag X-ray, and liquid bans. No large bags, aerosols, or sharp objects allowed. Arrive 15 minutes early to clear security. Your guide handles registration, but you must match the name on your booking. Children under 16 need no ID but must be with an adult. The process takes 10–15 minutes—smooth and efficient.
What happens if the Plenary Chamber is in session?
When the Bundestag is meeting (typically Mon–Fri), the Plenary Chamber is closed to tours. Your guide substitutes with an extended Government District walk, in-depth dome commentary, and access to the public gallery (if available) to observe debates from above. You’ll still visit the dome and terrace. On non-session days (weekends, holidays), full chamber access is included. The tour quality remains excellent either way—guides adapt seamlessly.
Is the dome visit guaranteed, or can it be canceled?
The dome is free to visit independently, but this tour includes guided access. However, the Bundestag may cancel dome bookings on short notice due to state visits, security, or maintenance. In such cases, you’ll still tour the rooftop terrace (open year-round) and Government District. Full refunds are issued if the entire tour is canceled. Scheduled closures: July 28–31, Sept 29–Oct 1, Oct 20–23, 2025 (terrace open). Your guide will confirm status on the day.
Can I stay in the dome after the tour ends?
No—the guided tour ends at the rooftop terrace exit. However, your guide registers you for a free independent dome visit (valid same day or next). Return via the official entrance (north side) with your registration email. This allows extra time to explore the ramp, audio guide (free), and views at your pace. Many guests do both—guided insights first, then leisurely photos.
Is the tour suitable for children or those with mobility issues?
Yes for children (under 12 must be accompanied); the dome ramp is gentle, and headsets keep commentary clear. For mobility, the tour involves moderate walking (1–1.5 km) on flat pavement and the dome’s 300-meter spiral ramp (gradual incline, rest benches). No wheelchair access to dome or chamber (stairs/elevator limitations). Assistance dogs are allowed. Notify at booking for front-row seating or pacing adjustments.
