Overview

The TCS London Marathon is the world’s largest single-day fundraising event and a crown jewel of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. On Sunday, April 26, 2026, more than 50,000 runners will take to the streets of the British capital to complete the iconic 26.2-mile (42.195 km) course. Known for its incredible spectator support and fast, flat terrain, the race is a “bucket list” experience for marathoners globally. The event starts in the leafy suburbs of Blackheath and Greenwich Park and finishes with a grand descent down The Mall, right in front of Buckingham Palace.

The 2026 edition continues London’s legacy of blending world-class elite competition with a massive “mass participation” festival. From the first crossing of the River Thames at Tower Bridge to the high-energy miles through the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf, the atmosphere is famously electric. Because demand for entries significantly exceeds the field size, the London Marathon is also a vital platform for charities, raising hundreds of millions of pounds for global causes. Whether you are running for a personal record or for a life-changing cause, the London Marathon offers a unique sense of community that is unmatched in the world of athletics.

Event Highlights

  • Iconic Sightseeing Route: Run past some of the world’s most famous landmarks, including the Cutty Sark, The Tower of London, Big Ben, and the London Eye.
  • Tower Bridge Crossing: Experience the race’s most photographed moment as you cross the majestic Tower Bridge just before the halfway mark.
  • TCS Running Show (Expo): Visit the ExCeL London from April 22-25 to collect your bib, attend expert seminars, and explore the latest in running technology.
  • The Grand Finish: Complete your journey with the final turn past the Victoria Memorial and down The Mall, cheered on by thousands of spectators.

Why Attend

The London Marathon is widely considered the best-supported race in the world, with over 750,000 spectators lining the streets to offer encouragement, music, and refreshments. It is an ideal race for those looking for a fast time, as the course is remarkably flat with only one minor rise in the early miles. For international participants, the race offers a perfect reason to explore one of the world’s most vibrant cities during the beautiful English spring.

FAQ's

What is the "Public Ballot" and can I still enter for 2026?

The public ballot is a random draw for the majority of the race entries; for 2026, the ballot usually opens in April 2025 and closes within a week. If you missed the ballot, your best remaining option is to apply for a Charity Place, where you agree to raise a certain amount of money for a cause. International runners can also secure a place through "Official International Tour Operators" who sell packages including hotel stays and guaranteed entry.

Is there a time limit for the London Marathon?

The London Marathon is one of the most inclusive races, with a generous official cut-off time of 8 hours to receive a finisher medal. A dedicated "Tailwalker" team remains at the back of the pack to support those walking the course and ensure they are safe. After the 8-hour mark, the roads begin to reopen, but the finish line remains open for those who wish to complete their journey.

How do I collect my race bib?

All participants must collect their bib (race number) and timing chip in person from the TCS London Marathon Running Show at ExCeL London. The show runs from the Wednesday to the Saturday before the race; you must bring your registration email and photo ID to collect your pack. Please note that there is absolutely no bib collection available on the morning of the race at the start line.

Is transport free for runners on marathon day?

Historically, London Marathon runners have been able to use the London Underground (Tube), DLR, and London Overground for free until 18:30 on race day. You simply need to show your official race number (bib) to the station staff to pass through the barriers. This free travel usually covers the most direct routes from central London out to the start zones in Greenwich and Blackheath.

What happens if I get injured and cannot run in 2026?

The London Marathon has a "deferral" policy that usually allows you to move your entry to the following year if you are injured or pregnant. You must notify the organizers by a specific deadline (usually the day before the race) to qualify for a deferral. Note that if you have a charity place, the deferral must be coordinated through the charity itself as they "own" the spot.
