History
Built between 1717 and 1723 by Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Belvedere was a summer residence and statement of Baroque grandeur. Architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt designed the two palaces—Upper and Lower—linked by terraced gardens modeled on Versailles.
After Prince Eugene’s death, Empress Maria Theresa acquired the complex in 1752. In 1955, the Marble Hall of the Upper Belvedere hosted the signing of the Austrian State Treaty, restoring the nation’s independence. Today, it houses Austria’s national gallery of 19th- and 20th-century art.

FAQ's
Does the tour include both Upper and Lower Belvedere?
No, this 1.5-hour guided tour focuses exclusively on the Upper Belvedere, which houses the main art collection—including Klimt’s The Kiss, van Gogh, Monet, and the Marble Hall. The Lower Belvedere (temporary exhibitions, prince’s apartments) and the 21er Haus (contemporary art) are not included due to time constraints and separate ticketing. However, your guide will explain the full complex history and point out highlights visible from the gardens. If you wish to visit the Lower Belvedere afterward, tickets can be purchased on-site or online separately. The Upper Belvedere alone contains over 400 artworks and is the undisputed highlight of the estate.
Can I stay in the palace after the tour ends?
Yes, absolutely—your skip-the-line ticket grants all-day access to the Upper Belvedere. The guided tour concludes inside the palace (usually near the garden exit), and you are free to revisit favorite rooms, linger in front of The Kiss, explore the gift shop, or relax in the gardens at your own pace. No need to re-enter; simply show your wristband if asked. Many guests spend an additional 30–60 minutes photographing or enjoying the café. The palace closes at 6 PM (9 PM on Fridays), so plan accordingly.
Is the tour available in languages other than English?
Yes, the tour is offered in 11 languages: English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Serbian, Croatian, Korean, and Chinese (Mandarin). Language availability depends on the guide assigned to your time slot—check the booking calendar for options. All guides are licensed art historians fluent in their language, and personal audio headsets ensure crystal-clear delivery even in larger groups. If your preferred language isn’t listed for your date, contact the provider up to 48 hours in advance to request it (subject to guide availability).
Are the gardens included in the tour?
Yes, the beautifully landscaped Baroque gardens are an integral part of the 1.5-hour experience. After exploring the art collection and Marble Hall, your guide leads the group to the upper terrace for panoramic views of Vienna’s skyline, with the Lower Belvedere and reflecting pools in the foreground. You’ll walk along the main axis, past sphinx statues and fountains, while learning about Prince Eugene’s vision and the gardens’ restoration. The outdoor portion lasts 15–20 minutes and is weather-dependent—rain ponchos are provided if needed. The gardens are free to enter independently, but the guided context elevates the experience.
What happens if I arrive late to the meeting point?
Unfortunately, late arrivals cannot join the tour and are not eligible for refunds. The skip-the-line entry is time-slot specific, and the group departs promptly from the Black Gate to maintain schedule and museum flow. If you’re running late, contact the guide immediately via the emergency number provided in your confirmation email. In rare cases, they may be able to delay by 5 minutes, but this is not guaranteed. To avoid stress, arrive 10–15 minutes early—use the Hop-on Hop-off stop or tram D as landmarks. The meeting point is easy to find with the green umbrella.
