History

Founded in 1893 by wine merchants inspired by a trip to England, FC Porto became the “Dragões” (Dragons) in 1922 when the city’s coat of arms was adopted. The Estádio do Dragão—designed by Manuel Salgado—opened in 2003, replacing the old Das Antas and instantly winning European Project of the Year.

It has hosted Euro 2004, the 2019 Nations League Final, the 2021 Champions League Final, and concerts by Coldplay and the Rolling Stones. The museum, opened in 2013, chronicles 27 league titles, 2 Champions Leagues, and a club that’s won trophies in every decade since the 1930s.

Highlights

  • See a collection of international trophies including the UEFA Champions League
  • Take an interactive journey through 27 thematic areas of the FC Porto Museum

Reviews

  • Aston Villa fan here—60th birthday gift and it was epic. The Presidential Box felt royal, the tunnel gave chills. App’s AR goals are next-level.
  • My son (10) and his friend were speechless at the Champions League trophy. Self-paced = perfect. Skip the audio, app is enough.
  • Museum is world-class—holograms, touchscreens, dragon LED art. Stadium access on non-match day was the cherry.

FAQ's

When is stadium access unavailable, and what’s the backup?

Stadium access is closed on home match days, the evening before UEFA games, and during concerts or pitch maintenance (e.g., reseeding). On those dates, the “Museum Tour Only” ticket (€15) lets you explore all 27 interactive zones with extra time—holographic José Mourinho press conferences, 360° goal replays, and the trophy room where you can lift a replica Intercontinental Cup. The app’s AR still shows the Presidential Box and tunnel in 3D. Most visitors on restricted days rate it 4.9/5, saying the museum alone is worth the trip. Full stadium access resumes the next available slot.

Is the tour guided or self-paced?

The museum is 100 % self-paced—no start times, linger as long as you like within opening hours (10:00–19:00). The stadium portion is unguided but structured: follow numbered signs from Presidential Box → tunnel → pitch → bench. Audio guides (€2) or the free FC Porto app narrate each stop in 6 languages. Staff are on hand for questions. This freedom lets families with kids move quickly, while die-hards spend 30 minutes in the 1987 European Cup exhibit. Average visit: 1.5 hours.

Can I see the actual Champions League trophy?

The original 2004 trophy is in a bank vault, but a full-size, officially licensed replica sits in the trophy room—polished daily, under soft spotlight, with the exact engravings. You can stand 30 cm away, take photos, and even “lift” it in the app’s AR mode. The 1987 European Cup replica is also on display, plus 19 Primeira Liga shields and the 2003 UEFA Cup. Touchscreen panels let you replay the winning goals in 4K. Past visitors say the replica feels just as heavy with history.

How interactive is the museum for kids?

Extremely—27 zones include motion-sensor goal celebrations (kick a virtual ball), a penalty shootout simulator, and a dragon sculpture that roars when you scan your ticket. The app turns phones into magic wands: point at a shirt to see the player’s career stats. A kids’ trail with stickers and quizzes keeps under-12s engaged. The trophy room has a mini replica for safe handling. Parents report even non-football kids stay 2 hours. Free entry under 4; strollers welcome.

Is the stadium wheelchair accessible?

Yes—ramps at museum entrance, elevators to Presidential Box (level 5), adapted tunnel route, and pitch-side viewing platform. Wheelchair users get priority stadium slots (max 4 per tour). The museum is flat throughout. Notify at ticket exchange for assistance. The 2003 design won awards for universal access. One companion per wheelchair enters free.
